Given that most of at us eat the majority of our meals hours at work, it’s important that your work
environment supports your ability to make healthy food choices. It can sometimes be a bit too easy to reach for the charity snack box or vending machine when you’re hungry, so here are some of the best healthy foods to have on hand for when the munchies strike.
I’ve split it up into categories because not everyone has access to a kitchenette to prepare their snacks. That way you can pick and choose form the list depending on the facilities available to you, there’s also suggestions for quick, easy, nutritious snacks at the end.
To keep in your desk drawer/locker/bag:
These items are mostly non-perishable so can be stored at room temperature or easily carried around in a backpack/handbag.
If you have a kettle/microwave at your disposal then oats made into oatmeal are a great breakfast or snack, and single serve sachets of flavoured rice are a quick and tasty lunch option. Just make sure that you buy a brand without too much salt or sugar - if you need help deciphering nutritional info then you can check out my post about how to read food labels.
To keep in the fridge:
The veggie sticks and hard-boiled eggs may require a little food prep but both of them should keep well for the whole week if stored in an airtight container in the fridge, making it simple to snack healthily.
Things like dips and cheeses should keep for more than a week if stored correctly but always use your own judgement - you never now how well maintained a communal fridge is, particularly if it's a busy office that will have the fridge opening quite frequently.
The following is a list of healthy snack options that you can prepare from the items listed above.
